Welcome to Barefoot!
Here in Costa Rica, the Language School runs on trimesters (Jan-Apr, May-Aug, Sept-Dec). Since we came in the middle of one, we are being put through a six week immersion program called “Barefoot.” It is basically a short survival Spanish course that people often come down to Costa Rica for. It consists of classroom- type instruction in the morning (on our supervisor’s back porch) and real world assignments every afternoon. Our day looks something like this…
5:30am – Get up, shower, devotions, breakfast
6:30am – Get Avalyn up, dressed, ready for school
7:00am – Leave the house
7:15am – Drop Avalyn off at school
7:30am – Start Barefoot
11:30am – Lunch
1:00pm – Pick up Avalyn
2:00pm – Go into town and practice Spanish (complete daily assignment which varies)
5:00pm – Dinner
7:30pm – Avalyn goes to bed
9:00pm – We go to bed
In January we will transition to the language school, where our schedule will be similar, but the school will be more formal instruction and less survival type stuff. Here is a picture of our group meeting.
There are seventeen people in our group. Our instructor’s name is Olga, and she has been teaching for almost twenty years. Her son, Seth, who just finished college, teaches on Tue/Thur. He is in the bottom right of the picture. They are both great and we are learning a lot!

One additional afternoon assignment. Give Avalyn a hug for us, and avoid the little fried potatoe things the street vendors sell out of 5 gallon buckets.
