Remember getting your driver’s license?

December 9th, 2009 by doug

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, its been a crazy week and we were out of town this weekend (more about that later). Today I went to get my Costa Rican driver’s license, which was a little more complicated than in the US. You begin at the driver’s license bureau (of which there is one in all of San Jose) where they send you to a clinic for your medical exam. Once there, they take your blood (to get your blood type) and the doctor (who was texting the entire time) asks you some basic medical questions. Once that is done (and you have paid your $30) they give you a medical form and you are ready to get copies. A lady makes copies of your US driver’s license and passport ($1/copy!) and sends you back to the DL office. From there, you stand in line to see the lady whose job apparently is to validate the copy you just had made. She looks at your DL and passport, looks at the copy, then puts a stamp and signature on the copy. I need that job. Then you are off to see somebody else, who examines the copies, and puts all of your vital information into the computer. He then gives you a slip of paper to take to the bank and pay. After walking to the bank, standing in line, and paying for the DL, you take your receipt back to the DL office, where you wait to have your picture taken. After the picture, they print your license and you are done. Piece of cake. 3 hours later I was home with my new Costa Rican driver’s license. Here is a picture…

all of that and basically they were copying and checking copies and they still don’t know if you can drive! do they use their horn for a turn signal there like in the caribbean?

If they had driving tests here, there would be no taxis.
