Downtown, where all the lights are
One of our assignments recently was to go downtown to the central market. This is a large indoor market where people can get fruits, veggies, coffee, meats, fish, cheeses, baked goods, herbs, natural medicines, clothes, woodcrafts, and assorted other things. It is one of the main places that the lower/middle class get their food. There are several markets downtown, however the central market is regularly inspected and is generally cleaner than the rest. It is a very interesting place, and we were assigned different fruits and veggies to locate and buy. Here are some pictures of the market.

This is what Costa Rica is known for…coffee. At the central market, it comes in daily from the farms, and is roasted right in front of you. Here a large batch is cooled after exiting the roaster. The smell is wonderful!

The market is a labyrinth of hallways and vendors, with no recognizable organization. It is very easy to get lost.

The area around the market is full of street vendors, many of whom are also selling fruits and veggies. It is very crowded, and sometimes dangerous.

Just down the street from the central market is Mercado Borbon, which is less touristy and even cheaper. Many poor people shop there. This picture is looking down the entryway into the market (it is below ground). Thanks Karen for the great pictures!
