At the Cross…

November 30th, 2009 by doug

This past Saturday, six guys from our orientation group and I hiked up to La Cruz de Alajuelita, which is a huge cross that sits on top of a mountain overlooking San Jose. The hike actually takes you to three different crosses, each at a higher elevation (Catholic countries are littered with crosses). It was a fairly tough, but very fun hike that took about three hours and covered about 2000 vertical feet.  At the top, you are sitting at 6600 feet (San Jose is on a plateau at just over 3000).  Unfortunately, past the first cross we got into clouds and lost our view, but it was fun nonetheless. Here are some pictures…

Here we are at the first cross. The view from up there was amazing!

Here we are at the second cross. As you can see, we are now in the clouds.

Much of the hike was on steep trails with very slick mud.

Finally, La Cruz de Alajuelita!

The wind near the top was crazy! We had 40-50mph gusts.

Glad to be back at the first cross! It was a fun hike that I hope to do again on a clear day.
