A half-million for a baby?!?

As everyone probably knows, we are expecting a new baby in January. She will be born here in Costa Rica, and today I went down to the hospital to pay for the birth. Apparently the private hospitals have some sort of weird desire to make sure they get paid, so they offer a sizable (20%) discount if you pay in advance. Also, they want cash. After spending the last few days getting money out of the ATMs (they won’t give you that much at once) I traveled downtown to pay the ₡494,000 (about $950) bill, which will cover everything unless she has a c-section or has to stay extra days. It was weird carrying that much cash. Here is a picture…

    wow how do I get my patients to pay cash like that! haha. also carrying around that much cash down there usually means you’re dealing something.
